Last update of the year

The catalogue announcing the arrival of our new adult reading materials has now been published by Ransom and can be found at:  http://www.ransom.co.uk/Leaflets.html You can also order a catalogue directly from Ransom.
This represents the next step on the long journey to publishing Hearsay  - a set of phonically structured reading books and support materials for adults.
The Hearsay books are currently being developed at 2 levels:

  • Stage 1: Based on a simple alphabetic code + some high frequency words + a limited number of topic specific words.
  • Stage 2: Building on stage 1 with the addition of a limited number of vowel digraphs + high frequency words +  a limited number of topic specific words.

The teachers guide clearly identifies the phonic knowledge and out of level words that need to be taught in advance.

All reading books in the series are designed to appeal to adult readers, with a wide range of appropriate topics, both fact and fiction, ranging from romance to war and adventure. In all cases the books are accessible and age-appropriate, and are structured to ensure success and build confidence.
We are really excited about Hearsay and its potential to engage adult readers and provide them with reading success and confidence.
A happy Christmas to all our readers!

SfL Materials November 2011

Welcome to our blog.
We just wanted to keep everyone up to date with our latest project: Hearsay Books. This is a really exciting venture to create a collection of phonic reading materials for adults and young people who are struggling with literacy. The aim is to publish 2 sets of books and follow-on materials which will support a phonic approach to reading. The materials will have age appropriate content at an accessible reading level so that beginner readers can experience success without feeling patronised.
Where we're at now?
20 books have been written and are now being carefully edited and prepared for the publishing process - this is a time consuming and sometimes painful process as we are trying very  hard to write within the constraints of a phonic structure and reduce the number of out of level words. Having said that, we are not shying away from topic specific words where they are essential to maintain interest and are appropriate for our adult audience.
We really believe that there is a need for HearSay Books and are looking forward to seeing them published in 2012.
